Course in Rural Areas Sustainability in the Adriatic-Ionian Basin: Multicriteria Evaluation of the Agricultural and Coastal Systems

The Course of Specialisation in Sustainability in the rural areas of the Adriatic-Ionian basin: multi-criteria analysis of agricultural and coastal systems has the aim to provide competence in managing and planning agricultural, environmental and rural systems at various levels in local, national, and international governmental, as well as non-governmental, organisations.

Course Description

Entirely in English, the Course involves experienced academics and professionals from leading Universities and International Organisations. Programme includes the following topics:

  • » Rural planning and management. Sources and use of land information. Applied examples of land evaluation for a sustainable development at regional level.
  • » Geographic information systems applied to rural areas. Managing and analysing spatial data.
  • » Systems Analysis as a tool to understand agro-ecosystems.
  • » Cropping systems analysis and simulation tools: SEMola and CSS.
  • » Decision Support Systems in agriculture as a tool to achieve sustainable development. Guidelines for the implementation of DSS in agriculture.
  • » Agrarian systems and Cropping systems: historical evolution and current structure.
  • » Common agricultural policy: perspectives and suitability to EU enlargement.
  • » The agrarian system evaluation: a case study.
  • » Sustainable rural development policies.
  • » The role of local knowledge in rural development planning.

Objectives of the Course

The course has the aim to provide competence in managing and planning agricultural, environmental and rural systems at various levels in local, national, and international governmental, as well as non-governmental, organisations.

Workship and Programme

The Course will be structured as follows:

  1. Phase 1: March –August 2004, on-line module, e-lectures (smil modules );
  2. Phase 2: September, 20th – October, 4th 2004, frontal module, Summer School in Tirana, Albania. Drawing up and presentation of a paper on a topic previously agreed during Phase 1.

Credits

The Course is made up of 12 university credits.

Target Audience

The Course of specialisation is addressed to graduates with at least a three-year degree “especially with scientific and economic degrees”, as well as to officials already working in local, national or international agencies belonging to the countries of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative. While the Summer School (Tirana: September, 20th – October, 4th 2004) is opened also to participants from other countries.
